What is Styrofoam?
Styrofoam is a trademarked brand of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) made by the Dow Chemical Company. It is often used in packaging, insulation, and craft projects. EPS is lightweight and provides good thermal resistance and buoyancy. However, it can be hazardous to cats if ingested or inhaled.
How Can Cats Be Exposed to Styrofoam?
Cats can become exposed to styrofoam when they encounter objects that contain it or are made from it. For example, pieces of packaging peanuts might end up scattered around the house after an online delivery has been opened, or craft projects with large amounts of styrofoam may be accessible to curious cats who want to explore them. In addition, some litter boxes have liners coated with small chunks of EPS which can come off in tiny particles as your cat scratches within their box during cleaning time.
It’s also important to note that humans may inadvertently expose their cats by handling the material without proper protective equipment such as gloves and masks – these activities should always occur outside or in well-ventilated areas away from pets!
Is Styrofoam Toxic To Cats?
The answer is yes; if your cat ingests enough styrofoam particles, he/she could suffer serious health consequences including vomiting and gastrointestinal blockage which could require surgery for removal – this would likely lead death if not treated immediately! Additionally, exposure through inhalation can cause respiratory issues as well as neurological problems depending on how much has been inhaled into the lungs over time (longer periods being more dangerous). Thus it’s best avoided altogether when possible – especially since there are plenty other non-toxic materials out there that provide similar benefits such as packing popcorn balls instead!
